Feeling the Winter Blues? Think Green!

2/7/2015

Winter has arrived! With months of gloomy days and cold weather ahead, your instinct may be to hunker down until spring. Building a sustainable future, however, requires a year-round commitment. The tips that follow will help you reduce your environmental footprint. You'll feel a little warmer on those cold winter days knowing you're doing something good for the planet.

Use hand tools for snow removal. Snow blowers are often powered by fossil fuels, which produce harmful emissions. Removing snow with shovels, brooms, and other hand tools is better for the environment. If you do not feel comfortable shoveling show, consider hiring a snow removal service or a neighborhood teen to do it.

Break out your sweaters. During the height of the energy crisis in the 1970s, President Jimmy Carter told Americans to "lower your thermostat to 68° and don a sweater." While everyone should set their thermostats according to their comfort needs, it is a good idea to lower them a few degrees when you are asleep or out of the house. A programmable thermostat can make this easy. Through our online store, National Grid offers Massachusetts residential gas heating customers a $25 discount on 7-day programmable thermostats and a $100 discount on Wi-Fi programmable thermostats.

Use non-toxic de-icers. Commonly used de-icers such as rock salt are made from chemicals that can become surface and groundwater pollutants that are harmful to plants, animals, and the environment. Consider using non-toxic de-icing substances such as clay cat litter, sand, or fireplace/stove ash to avoid hazardous chemical waste.

Save wood fire ashes for your garden. If you have a wood-burning fireplace, save the ashes and mix them into your compost heap to create a valuable soil additive that provides nutrients to your garden.

Take advantage of the sun. On sunny winter days, open the curtains and let in the sunlight. This will help to warm your home and reduce the need for heat from your furnace or boiler.

Close the recycling loop. Many articles of winter clothing, including jackets, scarves, gloves, and boots, are now being made from recycled materials. In fact, most fleece products are made from recycled plastic soda bottles. Moreover, some clothing and shoe manufacturers are using recycled cotton scraps and rubber tires to make their products. Keep this in mind when shopping for new winter clothing.

Snow Storm Precaution

PictureCape Cod Home Insurance

Here's what you should know about staying safe in a winter storm:

Before the Storm

Before the worst of the storm hits, stock up on rock salt, snow shovels and other snow removal equipment to help remove snow and melt ice on walkways. Putting sand down can help improve traction.

If you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, grab some extra wood or other heating fuel, as you could be stuck in your home for a few days without power.

It's also a good idea to stock up on food, water and medications. Check your stockpiles of essentials like batteries, toilet paper and pet food and test flashlights, battery-powered radios and other tools that might be needed if the power goes out.

While you’re at it, dig out all the old blankets, quilts and sheets you have piled away in case you lose heat.

If you have time it’s a good idea to make a “Family Communication Plan.” This will ensure that the members of your family can get a hold of one another if you're separated when disaster strikes.

What You Should Know

You can sign up in advance to receive notifications from local emergency services and the National Weather Service. FEMA, the American Red Cross and other organizations have free apps that can provide up-to-date information about shelters, first aid and recovery assistance.

During the Storm

When the storm hits, with wind and snow whirling outside, it’s best to stay indoors and keep warm.

If you have to go out, walk carefully through snow and on icy sidewalks. Avoid getting your clothes wet, as soggy clothing loses all of its insulating power.

Be very careful when shoveling snow. Overexertion can bring on a heart attack, which is a major cause of death in the winter months. To stay safe while shoveling take breaks, push snow instead of lifting it and lift lighter loads.

It’s also important to check frequently for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.

Frostbite is when the skin and body tissue just beneath it freezes. Symptoms of frostbite include loss of feeling and a whitish pale appearance in extremities, such as fingers, toes, earlobes and the tip of the nose. Make sure to cover the exposed skin — but avoid rubbing it — and seek medical help immediately.

Hypothermia occurs when your body reaches a dangerously low temperature. Symptoms include an uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and exhaustion. If you think someone has hypothermia, take his temperature. If it’s below 95 degrees, get medical help immediately. While you’re waiting for help, get the victim to a warm location and remove any wet clothing he’s wearing. Warm the center of his body first by wrapping him in blankets and if he’s conscious give him warm, nonalcoholic beverages.

Don't forget Fido! Pets should be brought inside when the temperatures drop.

Drive only when you must and avoid traveling alone in case you become stranded. Inform others of your schedule — including your destination, route and when you expect to arrive — and travel only on main roads where others will see you if you get in an accident.

Back at home, conserve fuel by keeping your residence cooler than normal and temporarily closing off heat to some rooms. Use blankets and additional layers to keep warm. If you’re using kerosene heaters, make sure that you’ve got plenty of ventilation so that toxic fumes don’t build up and refuel kerosene heaters outside. It's also a good idea to make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector. Never use a stove or outside cooking equipment like grills or propane heaters indoors.

If the pipes freeze, remove any insulation and wrap them in rags. Then open up all the faucets and pour hot water on the pipes, starting where they’re most exposed.

After the Storm

Once the storm has passed, grab a sled and enjoy the newfound winter wonderland before it melts away into muddy slush! Be sure to protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia by wearing several layers of warm, loosefitting clothing.

If your home lost power or heat in the storm and it still hasn’t returned, or if you don’t have the supplies you need to stay warm in your home overnight, you may want to stay in a public shelter. You can figure out where the nearest one is by texting “SHELTER” plus your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA). Make sure to dress warmly on your way to the shelter and bring anything you might need that night.

After all is said and done, assess how your supplies and family plan worked. If you think they could have been improved in any way, learn from your experience, and plan ahead for the next big one.

Cape Cod & Islands Flood Protection

By Mark Williams
The Columbus Dispatch

This is a new twist for the insurance industry.

Normally, it’s severe storms, tornadoes, hurricanes and wildfires during the spring and summer that produce the biggest catastrophic losses for the industry. This year, it’s snow, ice and cold.

The polar vortex in January and now the 7 feet of snow that has fallen in the Buffalo area this week figure to be the costliest storms for the industry this year, said Bob Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute.

“It’s very unusual for winter-storm losses to be leading catastrophic losses,” Hartwig said.

Winter storms typically produce the third-most-catastrophic losses, totaling 7 percent of all claims, according to the institute. Tropical storms and tornadoes are first and second at 40 percent and 36 percent, respectively.

January’s polar vortex caused about $2 billion in insured losses, Hartwig said.

Cold weather that pushed wind chills as low as 49 degrees below zero, combined with ice, heavy snow and high winds, froze pipes and damaged roofs in Ohio and other states in the Midwest, East and Southeast.

The Ohio Insurance Institute has tabulated the polar-vortex losses in the state at $97.8 million to $124.4 million, making it the second-costliest winter storm since 1993.

It’s far too early to get a sense of the damage caused by this week’s snowstorms in western New York.

Nationwide has reported only a handful of claims so far, and State Farm, the No. 1 issuer in New York, has said it, too, has received just a small number of claims. Nationwide is No. 8 in New York, but a further breakdown about the Buffalo market was not available.

Both insurers expect claims to rise when the weather warms up a bit and homeowners can better assess the damage. There has been so much snow that there have been reports of roofs collapsing under the weight.

The problems in that region might get even worse because flooding is expected as the fallen snow begins to melt over the weekend and rain is forecast.

“It could be weeks before we get a good picture of how bad it will be,” said Missy Dundov, a State Farm spokeswoman.

Claims from winter storms can be costly.

A report issued yesterday by Hartford Insurance said the cost of a claim for damage caused by frozen pipes runs about $18,000, while a claim for a hail-damaged roof might be about $10,000. Downed trees can cause damage of $3,000 to $5,000.

In addition to homeowner claims, Hartwig said there typically is a spike in auto claims from the kind of storms that hit Buffalo because they cause crashes and trees to fall on vehicles.

The snowstorm and the vortex follow what have been several years of extreme weather around the country, including superstorm Sandy, powerful tornadoes and the derecho, which was one of Ohio’s most-damaging storms.

Every year generally produces some kind of extreme weather event that insurers have to be ready for, say those in the industry.

Cold, Snow to Seize the Northeast

11/21/2014

PictureCape Cod & Islands Flood Insurance
Are you prepared for another cold, snowy winter season ahead? Are you prepared financially for structural damages to your home from heavy snowfall and higher precipitation?

Though parts of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic had a gradual introduction to fall, winter will arrive without delay. Cold air and high snow amounts will define the winter season. After record-shattering temperatures and high snow totals last winter in the Northeast, a similar theme will continue into the 2014-2015 season.

Cold air will surge into the Northeast in late November, but the brunt of the season will hold off until January and February. The polar vortex, the culprit responsible for several days of below-zero temperatures last year, will slip down into the region from time to time, delivering blasts of arctic air.
